what is an elopement?

I am so excited that you’ve chosen the intimate wedding route. Maybe you don’t want the stress of planning an entire large wedding, or perhaps you just want your day to be about you + your love (and maybe a few family and friends). Whatever your reason, an elopement is an AMAZING way to celebrate getting married in a way that represents who you are as a couple. An elopement doesn’t necessarily mean running away to Vegas for a secret marriage (though it totally can, and that’s rad too). It can be literally anything you want it to be, just on a smaller scale than a traditional wedding! Elopements are generally 10 people or less, or just the couple. Slightly larger elopement options are available if you rent an amphitheater or elopement venue, as most public spaces/parks will require special permitting and reservations for group events. My elopement packages start at 2 hours but the day is reserved for you, so more time can be added. There are SO many gorgeous spots in Colorado where you can get married and I am here to help you pick the perfect location. Elopements can include any kinds of celebrations that make your heart happy.

colorado elopement locations

Colorado is full of beautiful mountainous elopement locations. For a list of nature location recommendations, please click here. I can also help you pick a spot based on what kind of backdrop you envision, what permits are necessary, how many guests you will have, if dogs will be joining you, and how far you are willing to hike. Renting an Airbnb or private residence is also a great option that provides privacy for your celebration. A venue/amphitheater may be necessary for groups larger than 10 guests + if you will be including decor, meals, and other elements that cannot be brought into nature.

elopement timeline

To give you an idea of how elopements sometimes unfold, a general timeline might look like:

1. you + your closest humans getting ready at a hotel/airbnb while we capture detail and getting ready shots

2. a first look where you see your future spouse for the first time

3. exchanging a gift or love note before your ceremony

4. the ceremony - sharing your vows in a magical location

5. photos with each other + loved ones (most of my couples tell me they are camera shy and I promise you I can magically make that disappear!)

6. the celebration - popping a bottle of champagne, making a toast, sharing a picnic on a mountain top, roasting marshmallows by a fire…anything

7. a first dance, cake cutting, or whatever other traditions you want to incorporate

8. exploring/hiking while you bask in that new marriage bliss

colorado wedding vendors

If you would like a more elaborate elopement with decorations, florals, custom food, and other small details, I highly recommend hiring an elopement planner/stylist. This is best done at an airbnb, private residence, or rented amphitheater/venue to allow room for decorations and arches.

Getting married in Colorado is super easy. All you have to do is go to the County Clerk and Recorder's Office to get your marriage license, and there is no waiting period. Bring your IDs, and $30. You may self solemnize your marriage, so you do not need a judge, priest, or any other witnesses present during your ceremony. You just have to return the signed marriage certificate to the clerk’s recording office. Fun fact: your dog can sign your marriage license with a paw print!
